Message from the Department Head

On behalf of our faculty, staff, and students, I am pleased to welcome you to our website and invite you to browse the pages, which offer informative insight into our excellent programs. Our department continues to make amazing strides in research and teaching, as our faculty and students have assembled a remarkable number of national awards and their research is published and cited at impressive rates.

The Department of Political Science and Public Administration has a rich undergraduate curriculum, filled with numerous activities to provide a well-rounded education. Students are prepared to be critical thinkers, productive citizens, and leaders in a wide range of careers including: government and public service, jurisprudence, as well as an array of managerial options in the private sector. During their study, students complete a rigorous program of course work and have the opportunity to participate in a variety of auxiliary programs such as the Pre-Law Society, the Model Security Council, Stennis / Montgomery Association, and many others.

We offer graduate programs in Political Science and Public Policy and Administration. Our small M.A. program in political science gives students a background in research, writing, and critical thinking skills. Students graduate ready to take on roles and responsibilities that help them to become leaders in private business and government.

The Master of Public Policy and Administration (MPPA) program provides professional and clinical training for those interested in executive and managerial positions in public service. Most of our MPPA graduates go on to work for local and state governments or continue their careers working for the university. We also have placed a number of graduates in federal agencies.

The Ph.D. program in Public Policy and Administration is a research-oriented degree that prepares students for careers as scholars and researchers. These individuals are employed in university teaching positions or usually work in higher education administration. We have been very successful in placing our Ph.D. graduates in teaching positions. Some of our recent Ph.D. graduates are on the faculty or administrators at Appalachian State University, Boise State University, Cornell University, George Mason University,Louisana- Monroe, Oklahoma State University, Southern Illinois University, University of Louisville, University of Mississippi, Virginia Tech, as well as others.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us.
