Dr. James Chamberlain is an Assistant Professor of Political Science and Public Administration, where he specializes in political theory. As of Fall 2016, Chamberlain is the coordinator of the Masters in Political Science program at Mississippi State.

Throughout his research, Dr. Chamberlain engages with both ‘continental’ and ‘analytic’ traditions of political philosophy, as well as relevant work in the social sciences and humanities more broadly. His current research focuses on migration and borders, with articles in that area published in Constellations and Theory and Event. This work builds on Chamberlain’s book manuscript, Undoing Work, Rethinking Community, which explores the political significance of paid work in contemporary capitalist societies. The book argues that overcoming the pernicious effects of work requires a shift in values with regard to work as well as the provision of an unconditional basic income, but equally, an approach to community that breaks with the dominant tendency to see it as based on work and that conditions membership of the community upon the performance of work.

Dr. Chamberlain earned his PhD in Political Science at the University of Washington in December 2013. He also holds an MA in the Theory and Practice of Human Rights from the University of Essex (UK) and a BA in French and Philosophy from the University of Bristol (UK).
